OP here.

thanks all for the great commentary, clearly there are some true lox fans out there!

to the pp who mentioned russ & daughters - love their products - but just didn't have enough lead time to order for our brunch.

our other favorite place to buy lox is from agata; they slice the fish very thin and on an angle, so you have paper thin slices that are wide and ribbon-y. soooo pretty & tasty!

Correct slicing?

I don't particularly care for lox, but my husband adores it and I frequently get it from Wegmans. The OP alluded to "correctly slicing" the lox... can you tell me what you mean by this? Is there a particular way its supposed to be done? Can you tell by looking at it whether it has been sliced well?

Oh shit, I meant a pork chops yo' friend-that's what you get for not logging in under an assumed name.

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, and I really need that turkey (with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and deli mustard) on rye.

You hit the nail right on the head-wasn't raised Kosher and have no regrets about the occassional lobster, the more often enjoyed shrimp and the weekly staple of smoked turkey and cheese on rye (with mustard, not mayo, of course)!

Are you looking for belly lox or nova? If belly lox, the only place I can find it in DC is Morty's, and it's fine. Not as thin as I might like or as great in terms of texture as what I grew up on, but it will do. If you're fine with Nova, you can find that at Balducci's.

If you're serious about getting really great smoked fish, though, consider ordering from Russ and Daughters or Barney Greengrass in New York. They send it packed in dry ice. It's expensive but worth it for a special occasion. You can also get sable, whitefish, etc.

Another option is Wegman's; my parents live outside of Baltimore and they get really great lox at Wegman's. But you'll have to schlep pretty far out to find a Wegman's.

I know both these places! Thank you PP, for the recommendations.

Krupin's, which is now Morty's I think, on Wisconsin Ave in Tenleytown does OK. I should say, they do great business with former New Yorkers during Passover and etc. -- but they are not a NY deli, as any New Yorker is too quick to point out.

The other place that is consistently good and would also know how to slice lox or nova is Parkway Deli in Silver Spring. Very good, but not the Carengie Deli.

Am looking to buy some great lox for a birthday brunch. I would love a place that actually knows how to slice the fish properly too!
Many thanks in advance.
