The question should be, "Does anyone really like the American version of scones?" because most of the ones you get here are uniformly terrible.

I love a good scone. I hate a bad scone. Most scones you can get at Starbucks or the grocery store are bad scones.

Devon all the way. Damn it, now I am dying for a good scone, done properly.

American scones aren't good. British ones with clotted cream and jam? Holy cow.

I'm American but DH is British.

I love scones. But if they are not made correctly, they can be hard and dry. That’s why I prefer blueberry scones. If the scone is on the drier side, the moisture from the blueberries makes up for it.
They turn out hard if they are over cooked . Or if they are over mixed. Also the butter needs to be cold not softened.

This. They should be smaller and a little lighter - proper British scones that you have with tea. Not the giant ones from coffee shops that are like heavy hockey pucks.

I don't like them at the coffee shop. When my SIL makes them, hot out of the oven, they are moist and warm and yummy. But they become dry and stale very very quickly, and then there's no point in eating them.

I like lemon scones.

If you think they're just dry biscuits, you've not had a good one. I *love* scones and, done well, they're not dry or gross at all. Fresh is best. I'm biased since I spent a ton of time in England as a kid and have had really, really great scones. A hot, fresh scone with clotted cream and jam is pure heaven!

My DD loves scones. They are not all dry but I don't make them so can't comment on ingredients.

True. If I'm going to have an indulgent treat, I much prefer a delicious muffin.

I know that people love them but to me they are like calorie bomb hockey pucks. To make them eatable, I need to add loads of butter and that's nuts since they are mostly made of butter. I am sure toasted would be somewhat better but it's not where I'm spending my calories.

I’m open-minded, please tell me what if anything I’m missing about scones. I drink coffee or tea daily, sometimes both. Scones are just dry biscuits, usually with fruit in it? You have to take a bite and gulp it with coffee to get it down. They look pretty and elegant, but they’re gross, right? Are they just carried at every coffee shop and bakery because you can’t really tell when they’re stale - dry is dry?
