No. The questions and answers were put in place for students to get trained in answering college admissions type or employment type questions. It is also meant to be there to prod students into reflecting about what they have contributed, what experience they have gained, how was what they did beneficial to society, how it linked to their education, and what they found out about themselves. Its a great self-reflection and practice, a tool that most students would benefit from, if they took some time to fill it correctly. It also works to provide them with a way to answer the "any previous experience?" question.

Some times the questions don't apply well. Which class does picking up trash relate to? PE? Seems like you of those things that only seems beneficial from those very distant to actual real HS kids. Especially as there is no feedback to a kid who says pick up trash relates to English because the trash has words on them (my kid gets joy from writing ridiculous things)

I really don't care if other kids do not do SSL hours. The school shared the same information about SSL with all students so everybody is informed and knows the implication on opportunities and graduation requirement.

And when they earn those hours they have to fill out the forms. They would not have to do those make work projects if they filled out the forms for your' meaningful volunteer work'

The SSL requirement doesn't apply to your family, it applies to the MCPS students in your family.

Also, it's a state requirement. And if the MCPS students in your family don't complete the requirement, they won't be able to graduate from high school.

Our family doesn't bother doing SSL because of these ridiculous forms and requirements. We do our own volunteer work that's meaningful to us. There's always some silly B.S. make work project that the school creates so DC can earn the hours, so I'm certainly not going to make any further effort. Too many other more important things to do with my life.

Deadlines for each semester are no longer a requirement since a lot of under-performing students were forgetting to turn in their SSL forms in a timely manner and then having problems meeting the graduation requirements. Yes., now you can submit by June.

Here is why you should not wait to submit and meet the deadlines -
1) All commendations and award for SSL hours, gets tabulated in April.
2) Students misplace the SSL hours all the time or forget to submit.
3) Many honor societies look for number of SSL hours logged with the school SSL coordinator before they give the invite to students
4) SSL coordinators make mistakes all the time in capturing the SSL information and crediting to the right student.
5) Having the SSL hours captured correctly allows you to see it on a timely manner on MyMCPS. Otherwise you have no idea how many SSL hours are credited to your student.

This is 100% true.

While we'd like you to turn them in by certain dates, we will ALWAYS accept SSL forms until June 5th that were earned during the summer of 2019 through the end of the school calendar year in 2020.

My DS found a lost one and submitted it by the next deadline and got credit. I don't think anyone looks to closely at them. The time was legitimately put in. That is all that really matters.

But if you forget just hand them in late. They say they don't take them but they do.
