My third grader has been bringing Eureka math worksheets home since Day 2 of school this year.
Last year, our school had a No Homework policy.

Is your school doing Eureka Math this year? If so, a page of homework per night is required. Each homework sheet aligns with the lesson taught that day. My son's school is doing both Benchmark and Eureka this year, and math homework will start coming home this week. Benchmark has a homework calendar for suggested activities to do at home, in addition to the usual 20 minutes of reading per night. However, the Benchmark books won't come home like traditional guided reading books did. There are paper versions of the books that may be sent home.

Parent of 2nd and 4th, both teachers said reading for twenty minutes. 2nd grade has to do 3-4 math problems but they are not graded and don’t need to be turned in. 4th is in a CES and has daily homework, reading several chapters of a novel and corresponding worksheets, plus at least one math worksheet for compacted math. It’s not overwhelming yet but it’s also only the second weeks of school. After school clubs haven’t started yet either, plus instrument practice for 15-30 min daily.

Read for 20min and a grade appropriate math worksheet. Math especially should have HW. You need to re-enforce what you learned in school.

Homework was illegal in NYC schools up to around 60 years ago. It is a new concept

My bad. I heard the Principal announce there would be practically no homework, and thought she meant it applied to the entire school.

They will get to middle school, there will be homework, they will do it (or they won't do it). How much preparation for doing homework does a person need?

Studies show it is generally unhelpful in lower grades. They kids will learn to do it in middle school by Doug it, hit lie anything else new.

I am a big believer in evidence-based practices, so this is a great step.

My CCES 3rd grader had homework Monday-Thursday last week. At open house we were told there was nightly math homework and additional 20 minutes of reading.

Every school decides on their own policy, to answer a PP. I had one kid who really needed homework reinforcement, and one for whom it was a waste of time, so parents must know their kid and act accordingly. I allowed my advanced child to skip the work.

Which one? A few years ago, the Bethesda ES decided to continue with a light homework load. However Chevy Chase ES has a nearly no homework policy, unless the child has stuff to finish, and apart from CES projects.

Is this happening across the board at all schools or do individual schools have the option to do this? It just doesn't make sense in later grades.

There are a few reasons why the school is doing that:
The school doesn't want students to be stressed.
The school knows that students are enriched outside of school.
The school knows that all students learn everything in the classroom so no homework is needed.
The school knows that if the homework is too easy it wastes everyone’s time, but if it is too hard and needs parent assistance it is unfair to the students whose parents Cannot help.
