Um no. Keep it to two kids and pay on the books and there is nothing illegal about it

+1. Saying a nanny share is illegal is just silly.

Yea. They are illegal in Fairfax Virginia, and probably the rest of the state. The was how DSS explained it to me when I called to ask:

If you hire a nanny to come to your house to care for your child, it's fine. If they bring their (the nanny's) children? It's fine. But the moment there's someone elses kids? You're now a home daycare and need to be licensed.

Unless there's no money being exchanged. Then the rules are more lax...

For our share I was due in July went back to work in September but had lined up the share by May.
Are you looking to form a nanny share with another family - meaning you and the other family meet, like each other, have similar philosophies and then meet and interview the nanny together. Are you looking to join a family who already has a nanny and you would be joining that established relationship ( which is what we did) or are you looking to find and vet a nanny on your own and then once you have that settled find another family? All three ways have pros and cons but timing and coordination is difficult so I would give time.

If you plan to find a family and then find a nanny - start in Nov.
If you plan to find a nanny and then find a family - start in Jan. Assuming you can carry the nanny for a few months solo until you find the right partner family. Earlier if you can’t.
If you plan to join an existing relationship- start in Jan / Feb

How picky you are will make a difference too. Are you hosting, they host, split? Are you looking for traditional 8:30 -5:30 paying in the books and a hour overtime or are you looking 7:30 -6:0 but only two days a week? What is your current plan for nap and sleep training? Can the nanny drive the baby or not? What is the plan for holidays and vacations (like are you super flexible or are you both ER doctors and work federal holidays). The more requirements and needs you have the longer the search to find the right family and the right nanny.

As a general rule with care, early is always better. Locking it down will make you feel better and long lead times mean you will have time to look for the right fit rather than just any person. But even once you lock it down, keep an eye out so that if the person or other family flakes you have options.

We found the family shortly after we delivered but didn’t need a nanny for 6 months. You may have trouble finding the best nanny for March as most people switch up situations in summer but people are always moving ect so it’s not bad to put out feelers early. I would find a family first then find a nanny together

I live in NoVA and am moving to Bethesda this winter. Thanks for the response.

Hi, I am due with a baby in early January and need a nanny share to start in March or April in Bethesda. When/where do I find another family looking? I am feeling overwhelmed and nervous that I will struggle to find what we're looking for. They seem to be much more popular where I live in NOVA but I might be wrong. TIA
