They let in less qualified candidates in the place of better qualified candidates. At least they did in 1990. Ask me how I know.

Let's remind this to the NYT next time they promote racist racial admissions:

"College admission is a zero-sum proposition — for every legacy admitted, another promising applicant is denied the career and economic opportunity that a top degree can provide."

I went to Smith and would love my daughters to go there. I don't see anything wrong with the legacy. As I understand it, if two candidates are the same, they lean towards the legacy. There is something to be said of tradition. And, can you imagine how wonderful it would be to share an alma mater?

The NYT is the elite itself protecting itself through questionable means like the Joi Ito example shows.

If they publish this it's because somehow it protects their elite status. Perhaps they want to distract from the Harvard case and the racial discrimination they (the NYT) continues to defend in 2019?

Can you actually read the editorial before posting? They address this exact complaint

I read the article and they note the position, follow it with a barely relevant response and consider it refuted. I don’t think they addressed it in any way other to restate their conclusion and repeat that it was unfair.

What is there to explain? They like cultivating community among its alumni.

You, my friend, are quite the sophisticated thinker.

You should ask whether Joi Ito, the disgraced former head of MIT Media Lab and NYT Board Member until a couple days ago (and while they hid his dirty laundry) was somehow involved in the piece.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2019/09/07/opinion/sunday/end-legacy-college-admissions.amp.html

They make a strong case to end legacy admission and call it a shameless way of preserving the elite.
