Looking at the extended warranty and service plans for 5 years, 100K miles, which are quite pricey. Anyone have any experience with these and are they worth it? And how are the value and quality of service alternatives like the independent mechanics in Rockville/Potomac/Bethesda these days once service plan expires compared to dealers?
Only you can answer the question if the service plan is worth it. It’s insurance for your car’s future repairs. Do you believe it has value or not?
As far as independent repair shops go it varies by the shop and the mechanic. I’ve used them and been satisfied with their work overall. However, don’t think you’ll save a ton of money going to an indy for repairs. You’ll save some, but it won’t be huge.
Good luck on your decision. FYI, I have a 2003 X5 with 115,000 miles on it. Coincidentally, as a PP suggested, I’ve been putting roughly $2k/year into it for repairs for the last 5-6 years. Prior to that, very little. But mine has pretty low miles for its age. Selling it next year for something else.
