It’s saved us a lot of money on ours. It expires as 100,000 miles so we’re definitely trading it in then.

I have a 2017 x5 and am in almost the exact same situation - I blew through the 36k warranty in July (about 27 months after purchase). Right before my warranty expired, I purchased the extended option. The warranty covers brakes/pads, which will need to be replaced in the next year or so, so the warranty will be worth it for that alone. We plan to keep the car at least five more years.

And that would be a good thing to most people who can do research. Toyota = Reliable. Lexus is a luxury Toyota, which is a great thing. The reliability and costumer satisfaction of an X5 is really low. Just look it up. My neighbor bought one that was a year old. She is very unhappy with it. If you don't like the look of the Toyota, go with the Mercedes GLC. The ratings are amazing so far, and I think it is the best looking small SUV in the market.

Only you can answer the question if the service plan is worth it. It’s insurance for your car’s future repairs. Do you believe it has value or not?
As far as independent repair shops go it varies by the shop and the mechanic. I’ve used them and been satisfied with their work overall. However, don’t think you’ll save a ton of money going to an indy for repairs. You’ll save some, but it won’t be huge.
Good luck on your decision. FYI, I have a 2003 X5 with 115,000 miles on it. Coincidentally, as a PP suggested, I’ve been putting roughly $2k/year into it for repairs for the last 5-6 years. Prior to that, very little. But mine has pretty low miles for its age. Selling it next year for something else.

They can only make money on the extended warranties because the plans cost so much more than what the pay out in repairs. BMWs are just going to cost a couple grand a year for basic maintenance at the end of the warranty. If you can't afford that then you can't really afford a BMW.

Remember you are payign them now for possible service 5 years from now. They get to have your money now. That's why we didn't do it for our Audi. Also the dealers send us coupons every month so service is never list price anyway.

Second the advice to get the warranty if you’re going to keep the car past the warranty time. DH utilized the extended warranty several times on his BMW, once the replace the entire a/c system!!! And the car only had like 28k miles on it!!! (He only puts 6kish miles a year on cars so the car was 4/5 yrs old at that point.)

He ultimately got rid of it soon after the ac fiasco because he was sick of the maintenance.

I regret not getting it for my X5. If you plan on keeping the car after manufacturer warranty expiration, then get the extended warranty.
