People had more cash to spend in 1998! Money is tight for many people these days. Health care expenses, education costs, rents and mortgages. If a guest gives $150, they’re being as generous as they can, and they should be thanked profusely.

Couples often don’t choose or want the wedding. Let’s say an young Italian American Catholic couple marries and to please parents have most economical wedding possible at today’s prices and costs 40k. Both parents of bird and groom chip 10k each.
Now you are an out of town Rich aunt and uncle you attend the wedding of you godchild eat and drink like a king and give $150 a couple and get furious if thank you note does not come quick enough.
When a young couple does everything in power to do a nice enough wedding so guests will enjoy while pinching every penny and being cost conscious rich guests who purposely short change is not nice.

They don't. They can spend whatever they want. I live in Westchester and I've been to fancy rooftop Manhattan weddings and low-key river/ boat/ garden weddings. It's all the couple's choice, but it's also their choice to pay for it. I give the same gift regardless of what they might have spent.

How many people are in a position to go to both a "low class" Southern wedding and a fancy Manhattan wedding? Not many, I'll bet. And that you chose to pick "low class" South instead of, say, upstate NY tells me you haven't been to a low class wedding in the South and are making this up to try to justify your weird and narcissistic attitude towards wedding costs.

They also choose to have these things, or not. Their expense is not their guests' obligation.

I swear the same poster keeps asking this question in trying to convince everyone there is a rule for wedding gifts (and that it must only be cash and only something like $250 per head or whatever).
Just give what you are comfortable giving, whether cash or an actual gift. The last wedding I went to in the NY area, in Westchester County, was about 10 years ago and had plenty of people hauling physical gifts to the reception, not envelopes of cash.

It depends on so many faxes, there's really no going rate. Are they just starting out or are they already well established in their lives/careers? Do they have a registry? What is everybody else in the party doing? There's no set standard. I always call some key attendees and we settle on a "standardized" gift amount usually $250
