Does any other club have a pool 5 teams deep in girls year after year?!?!?
A good coach will beat ball skills like a dead horse through U12 and teach basic soccer techniques. Basic meaning how to good throw-ins, basic goalie techniques, rules, and position responsibilities. Teams will look confident on ball and be able to connect passes but not look like robots and have some type of freedom to move on the field.
I will say the woman coach at Loudoun seems very good. This group of girls have good ball skills and are able to win without looking tactical.
The coach at Bethesda also follows this philosophy. They have probably improved more than any team in the region.
The coach who just wants to win will have set plays, sometimes even multiple...loses they're temper when they start losing or miss an easy goal. Perfect example of this is the '09 Great Falls Spirit Coach...would never put my DD there. Probably the nastiest coach I've seen in this age group.
Pipeline's top team is an even mix of these two...
The VSA 09s have decent ball skills but lack speed/athleticism of the bigger clubs.
FC Virginia has a very weak 09 age group but seem to be improving. It should be said who knows how many of the 09s are playing up.
Perhaps most impressive of the bunch is PPA. Who knew?!?!? Coach seems calm. The girls seem talented and very good on the ball. Only issue is it seems dead end competing against Bethesda and Maryland United at an older age group.
Have not seen much of Arlington 09s? Would like to know more about the coach's practices/philosophy if anyone could knows!
I would also be interested to know about Aexandria as we have not run into them much. Seems like they have a decent outcome.
We will probably switch clubs after spring next year. Having lost faith in our Club Coach. Our DD coach does next to zero ball skill work at practice so we are stuck with the bill for for extra ball skill training to develop confidence on the ball. Figure we have one year to try to maximize ball skills before trying for DA/ECNL. All I care about is a coach with positive reinforcement who is calm despite result. Would also like to keep playing 1st and 2nd Tier teams.
