DCPS teacher here- we actively seek out local preschool teachers whenever we have partner teacher and early childhood lead teacher openings. Our pay is competitive, work days shorter, summers off, etc. This, in addition to daycare/preschool workers going back to college for additional certification, creates constant vacancies.

Most daycare centers have frequent turnover, unfortunately. It's a really demanding job and they are not paid enough for how much they work! I spent one summer working at a Bright Horizons (I'm a grade school teacher) and it was the HARDEST and most tiring job I've ever had. These teachers are saints! So, I wouldn't be alarmed at some turnover year to year.

Given the timing, we don't consider it a red flag. If there was a lot of turnover in March or in November then we would be worried. But for the most part, the teachers who we have spoken to that are leaving are leaving to start the "new school year" at a new school.

We are very sad about some of the departures because they've been with the school for years but that has reinforced how many teachers have been with the school for a long time.

Nice try!

Some will move on to higher paying jobs as they gain work experience, so some turn over is to be expected.

If high turnover then I would be concerned about working conditions. Are they asked to do what is against regulations? Are they seeing neglect or poor treatment of the children in care?

I think that a lot of turnover is a red flag, especially if people are leaving for similar-type centers, which would indicate dissatisfaction at their current job/salary.

Of the teachers at my kid's preschool who are not returning next year, all of them (only a few total) are leaving either due to out-of-state moves or changing jobs to a new sector (e.g. becoming a kindergarten teacher). None are leaving for a different preschool.

How much turnover? Any context to explain it? How does the center manage turnover?

If teachers are not lasting more than a few weeks I would consider it a huge red flag. If a couple of teachers leave during the course of a year then that is probably normal. I do consider it a good sign when teachers have been there a few years.

Yes, red flag

I think it means that the workers aren't happy, which points to poor management from the director. It's normal to have some turnover, but when the whole staff turns over there is something wrong.

Hi, I've heard about lots of staff turnover at SAECC. Does anyone know anything about this, and would you consider this a red flag for the kind of care the children receive?
