When the grandmother dies? That's the whole premise.

This is PP - and just go see the movie.

Actually, as a first-gen American, I felt the story reflected so many of the mixed feelings that play out in the experience of leaving behind your country, culture, language and family -- as well as the experience of those who stay. And for any family, the question of how much truth we reveal to one another is complex. Also, the music is awesome -- loved the father-daughter karaoke to Killing Me Softly and the beautiful version of Come Healing.

Yes!! I loved the karaoke scene. I loved that whole wedding scene. (I loved the whole thing.)

I just saw it today. It was fine, but I don’t understand all the rave reviews.

+1. Saw it with my daughter who reported that the This American Life episode was much more entertaining.

I just saw it too, and really enjoyed it. A very sweet, uplifting film. Just what I needed.

There was a recent episode of This American Life that interviewed the real family and gives more context around the decision not to tell her.

We just got back from seeing The Farewell - it was such a good movie. If you get the opportunity to see it, go!

Awkwafina is amazing in it (in a cast full of terrific acting). She is super low key in this movie - big change from her character in Crazy Rich Asians.

(I have so many questions about the family's choice not to tell the grandmother she is dying of cancer - that's not a spoiler; that's the setup for the whole movie! - is there anyone from China here who can explain some of how this all works?)
