This is probably true to some extent but I suspect the value is close to 100 ft-lbs in almost all vehicles. Wheel studs are all about the same size and that determines how much you need to stretch the material to get retention. The chain stores just zip them on with an air gun until "tight". Sometimes too tight. If you exceed the elasticity of the stud, it will break or fracture.

The studs and nuts have different coefficients of expansion and therefore the nuts can loosen. Just get a torque wrench and do it yourself.

What's the deal with this? Costco says to return after 25 miles every single time. I've never heard this from any other place - mechanic, dealer, or chain like Firestone.
