Please do not get a Silver Labrador. The breeding that’s required to do this leads to a lot of health problems for the dogs. There’s a reason that this color is not recognized as an official breed color by the AKC.

No. Real chocolate labs are the product of yellow and black labs. They are genetic anomalies. The mother or father are either black or yellow. A reputable breeder would never breed a chocolate lab with another chocolate lab. When you see chocolate labs that have a more orange coat you know they are a product of questionable breeding. A good breeder will not be able to tell you what color their litters will be until they are born. They do not breed for color at all.

She wants a silver lab not a Weimaraner. Silver labs don’t drool endlessly and they don’t chase cats as part of their temperament.

At the end of the day, a reputable breeder will never breed for color. They’ll breed within the standard, sure—but they should be breeding for structure and temperament first. Nearly all decent breeders will match the puppy to you, vs you picking the puppy.

A lab is a fabulous breed to bring home—but I’d go looking for the best lab breeder you can find and be open to a chocolate/yellow/black with the right personality for your family set up.
