It's completely normal in some parts of the country, and completely not-normal in other parts of the country.

It is difficult for MCPS to start after Labor Day and end before the third week of June due to religious holidays, snow days, using schools for elections, etc.

Look at one of the hundreds of threads discussing it. Once your kids are in high school and taking AP classes, there is definitely an advantage to starting earlier. MCPS also was not able to do a full week of spring break because of Hogan’s law, which irritated people.
I have lots of friends whose kids are heading back to school this week - both in the south and the Midwest - so there is a large range of normal.

I think they will start the Mon before Labor Day.

I agree. Labor Day is late in 2020 (September 7). I don't see them waiting to start school until September 8. August 31 or Sept 1 are more likely now that they don't have to comply with Hogan's Labor Day mandate.

Here is the initial memo about it, including the parameters and required days off. Calendar scenarios will be presented to the Board's Policy Management Committee in September, then the full Board will decide on the final calendar later in the fall.

My guess is they would not start 2 weeks earlier than this year all at once. My guess is they will go back to starting the last Monday of August. Then the following year they might consider another week earlier. I think it would be too disruptive and catch people off guard to move it back 2 weeks for next year. But I have no insider information.

They will start before Labor Day.

Anyone have any smart guesses about what they'll do? After all the fuss about the Hogan EO, and the veto override, I can't imagine they'll go back to a post-Labor Day start. I know that, just prior to the EO, they were considering moving the start time back a week -- to mid August instead of late August. Anyone know whether that's back on the table? I rely on you guys that track the insider info!

No. In the fall.

They usually don’t approve one until the fall, I think November.

They waited for the MD Gen Assembly to pass legislation to get rid of Hogan’s trash Labor Day law. I imagine October will see a calendar.

Recently the start has been after Labor Day.

Anyone know what the status is? Haven't they usually approved it by now for the following year? We're starting to think about vacation for next year, as I'm sure other people are. I'm assuming a mid-August start, but would like to know....
