If it's not a turning lane, slower traffic keeps right. Period.

If you're cruising in the left lane and there's nobody behind you, fine. But if someone's coming up, you move over right. There's no excuse.

No, you just stay right. It’s the law in many places.

And don't forget about all the special people. We have lots of them in the DC Metro area - no rules apply to them because they are so special!

when you're on a freeway/highway, it sure as shit is!

Idiots around here never learn very basic driving etiquette (and law in many places) - stay right, pass left.

We’ve done a few road trips this summer and 9 out of 10 times the a-hole who won’t get out of the left lane has VA plates.

Agreed. But that's not the same as keeping it exclusively a passing lane.

There are no standards in America. There are just masses of morons.

I wondered if it's because there's always traffic congestion on the highways so the drivers are trying to spread out on all the lanes.

OP you are 100% correct about the passing lane. That said I think the issue in the US is that many of those drivers who do not use the left lane for passing only, do so knowing they're being ass holes. It's their need for control, plain and simple.

Bruh, Europe is superior in every aspect. Relax. I've also seen people treating the left lane as a regular lane in no traffic. OP is right.

I'd like to introduce an interesting observation I've experienced driving in the US. As someone who's driven all over the world, primarily in Europe, and has lived in VA-DC-MD area for decades, I have to point out one major flaw that I can't put my finger on it. American drivers treat the left lane, aka the "passing lane", as a regular lane. This is predominantly true in our area on highways such as 95, 495, 66 etc. It's become such a phenomena that in most cases I find myself using the right lane more and more to avoid the traffic and clogging in the left lane. On average, I see 3 to 4 times more vehicles parked in the passing lane as compared to the other lanes.

Now, is this a contribution of mainly shoddy driving requirements in this country? Compared to Europe for example where the drivers go through rigorous testing, the American standards require a multiple choice test with a simple lap around the DMV. Is it the lack of education or is it something else? I've seen elderly parked in there going 5-10mph below the speed limit. I've also seen the arrogant and entitled drivers trying to "enforce" the speed limit on speedsters to show them authority. Hell, even if those said drivers are going 10-15mph over the speed limit, they do not move over for a faster vehicle. Others just seem clueless as you pass them by or completely checked out while driving. I've also noticed signs on highways that 'Slower traffic should merge right'. Not a lot of folks follow that. In the end, the byproduct is more aggression, frustration, and multiple delays.

Why the epidemic?
