I would only take cash from a private party sale. The other option is to do the transaction. In the buyers bank so you can verify the cashiers check is authentic.

Carmax gave us the highest price and let us take about two weeks to shop around. I would at least ask them what they would pay.

I paid 12k cash one car and very nervous that much cash on me all in 100s.

Although I sold my used Camry 6k and I got cash.

Cash only....$8500 not that much. If we are talking, $20k plus, then certified check but only hand over the title after the check CLEARS which can take a day or two. This is the advise my bank gave me when I recently sold a car for $35K. The buyer drove the car home after both he and I met at my bank and deposited the cashier check in my account. After the check cleared two days later, I met him and handed over the signed title. Done.

If it is old, that is a lot of money to ask for.

Unless it is a Honda or Toyota.@

I agree with PP that this is the best option.

Certified checks are faked all the time.

Or We Buy Any Car. Annoying commercials, but I know someone who got more there than at Carmax.

Their evaluation on line was less than what a dealer would give me.
Dealer offered 5k, their site 4700. Not worth it.

If you are asking that kind of money, its not that old.

I wouldn't carry $8k in cash around. Certified check?

My old car is up for sale. I will take 8500 for it.

Is it risky to ask for it in cash?

I feel like that is low enough for a cash only deal...with so many scams and fake checks it seems safer to me.
I have not sold a car to a private party in like 20 years and not sure how it works now!

Thanks!
