When my uncle retired 10 years ago, he noted that all his recently retired male friends bought luxury pick-up trucks. This was in the NYC suburbs of Connecticut.

After 30-40 years of being expected to wear white dress shirts every day, they wanted to get back to their western/cowboy dreams of yore.

+1. I think it's tacky and low class to classify things as tacky and low class. It makes as much sense as a gas guzzling SUV.

These trucks always make me think of the show My 600 Lbs Life because the people coming for weight loss surgery always roll up in one of these. I guess they are roomy???

I don't think it's tacky or low class. I think it's strange and a little bit confusing when someone with no need for a serious pickup has one (I grew up where people use these for work), partially because I realize how expensive they are.

Do you live in this area? If so, it's tacky. If you live in Texas (or Bentonville), it's normal.

Trade association, so American brand preferred, 40-something DH drives a large luxury SUV now but kids are older and we don't cart groups around anymore. He wants to switch it up and get this, a "luxury" pickup truck, which I think on a 1 to 10 tacky scale, is at least an 8 or 9. I think it's not only tacky, it's something for hillbilly pensioners in their 60s or 70s. And no, outside of Costco and Home Depot, we don't ever haul anything.
