You have bigger problems than punishment. What is the root of this behavior?

Fired for cause.

OK, but what kind of "cause". Repeatedly late? Drugs on job? Sexual misadventures on the desk? Didn't show up because of meth addiction? What?

No punishment, but disappointment, certainly, as well as a lecture on what not to do at work. It will depend on the mistake, of course. My son has Asperger's tendencies, and I can see myself in that situation.

Unless the student somehow deliberately got themselves fired, the firing is punishment enough. Time to figure out how to help them for when it counts a lot more.

Age of student? Why fired? What type of internship? Truly "fired" for poor performance?

That would be fairly impossible to verify, unless you knew the boss, I suppose. But otherwise you have to believe your fired child’s account, who doesn’t exactly have a ton of credibility at this point.

Not sure how to "punish" an adult student, but I do think I'd make it clear that my continued support (living at home during summers/ after graduation, any monetary support you give them now while they're in college, etc) was contingent upon them making the right choices. If you're not working, getting decent grades, and generally behaving like you have a life plan and take it seriously, then you shouldn't plan on an extended stay at Hotel Mom & Dad.

Uh. What? How does one “punish” a non minor? Was it earning money crucial towards college budget? If so make clear you are not going to make up that money and they need to find a new way to earn cash, stat.

Why did he or she get fired??

Reason for being fired?

Presumably being fired is punishment enough, but we don’t punish adult offspring generally.
