OP, did you start another thread about an “involuntary haircut.” ?

I recently was wondering what causes older women to get short haircuts--the stylist or does it just get thinner? I think long hair is fine at any age as long as it is thick enough to look good.

I totally agree. At the very least, if the stylist had concerns about the requested trim or thought op "needed" more cut off, step 1 is not to chop hair but to communicate. Ultimately it's OP's decision and if the stylist doesn't respect her wishes, it's time for a new stylist.

I am shocked at all these people. Long hair is NOT age-inappropriate. If you like how you look with long hair, then keep it long. I think you should have told her that you weren't happy. People need to hear that it's upsetting when they don't listen.

She knows better, some stylists decide they hate long hair on anyone after 30? 40? 50?

Just would not go back.

Sorry OP, I'm sure it must feel crappy to not be listened to, but in all likelihood the hair stylist knows more than you and did you a favor. Long hair really doesn't look good on most adults anyway, and raggedy long hair looks terrible. Thank her and move on.

I wondered about damage also, but I'm diligent about getting a good trim every 6-8 weeks. I don't think it was terribly damaged. She just seemed to think I need something different, which wasn't what I asked for.

She likely cut off damage. Some people cling to their long hair no matter what it looks like.

If you don't want a haircut, don't go to a hairdresser. Sounds like you could have trimmed it yourself and saved yourself the trauma.

I've already begged for advice on the beauty forum, but I just wanted to vent here about my new stylist today who didn't listen to me at all. I told her I just wanted a trim to clean up the ends of my fairly long hair, but she seemed to think she knew better. The next thing I knew, she was starting to cut short layers and taking off a lot of length. I told her I did not want that, but it was too late. She kept saying "you need this."

Unfortunately there's not much I can do, so I'm just going to have to be patient for a few months. But I just thought it was terribly unprofessional of her. She's the salon owner, so there was no one for me to complain to.

Thanks for letting me vent. Maybe my hair grew a millimeter in the time it took me to type this!
