Flat coated retrievers-not for people who arent home a lot though. They are the clingy version of Golden Retrievers. Actually, flat-coated retrievers were THE family dog in the early 1900s but when both parties started working out of the house, they became unpopular because they become destructive without attention and affection.

They are fun, goofy, cuddly, sweet, well-mannered but puppy-like.

I'd love to have a husky, but the shedding and their talking deter me. Beautiful, smart dogs, but every person I know with one is always complaining about them when they blow their coats and how often they escape even the tallest, most enclosed yards.

Same! We've had several and have been so lucky that they've not been vocal dogs. All of them have been the biggest cuddlers and fantastic with every human they met.

We have a hound/beagle mix rescue now who has many of those same good qualities. However, he's a pro escape artist and will follow a scent trail for miles. We had to invest in a GPS collar for him because of his ability to wiggle out of every type of harness we've bought.

Coonhounds. Wonderful dogs. Sweet, family oriented, affectionate and super low key in the house. Out of the house- extreme hot nose with hunting instinct, so they won't be off lead.

Border Collies- it will be like having another adult living with you. Smart, loyal, affectionate, the females are very emotional and interactive, but they need a lot of energy release.

The best? That mutt mixed breed in the kennel near you, or in a kill shelter ready to be euthanized in an hour and then placed in a large plastic bag outside the pen while they bring in the next victim. He/she will be your best friend for as long as they live....I promise. Do that. Today.

* There are a ton of coonhounds in kill shelters right now, BTW. Hunters abandon them all over the south and they are picked up.

Goldens. I have two right now and used to have two years ago. Smart, beautiful, and great with people/kids. Most nights I have the two of them cuddled up next to me on the couch.

Yes to Golden’s!! My absolute favorites.

German shepherds.

Words that come to mind: strong, intelligent, handsome, noble bearing, athletic, protective and bonded to their family. This is my first and possibly last dog (we love this one, but spouse doesn't want another dog after given the time commitment to exercise, etc.).

When I'm older, if I don't have one myself, I may volunteer at a shepherd rescue.

They are lovely. Unfortunately they have developed, through overbreeding, many serious mutations and their lifespan is very short now.

Great Danes.

Easy going, loyal, happy, trainable. Despite their size, they take up very little “space” in a lot of ways, as they’re pretty happy just being couch dogs, other than when you’re doing something with them. There is NOTHING like watching a 140lb dog get the zoomies all over the yard because they’re so darned happy you’re home.

It’s not a breed for everyone, and actually one I’d caution a lot of people against, but it’s mine, and our house feels so darned empty after losing our last girl.

I love Dobermans. I would never have one, but they are so beautiful, and the ones I've known have been very sweet.

I also love Bernese Mountain dogs. they are huge and hairy and I would never allow one in my house, but I love them.
