Some nannies don't understand the taxes -- we had one that I had to figure gross and let her know what the net pay would be. The withholding was not enough and she owed taxes at tax time and expected me to pay what was owed. Her former employer had handled it this way so it was very complicated. She basically had no understanding of the tax system. Luckily she was very good at childcare.

OP, how would you feel if she arranged her taxes to have far too much taken out so that she gets a very large refund and what you thought would cost $1,00/week ended up costing $1,200? You can get an estimate of what would be withheld, generally 20-25% and offer a fair hourly rate based on that, but in absolutely no profession will you negotiate in terms net pay.

A nanny's income tax refund does not change what the employer owes. SMH.

It's not advisable to negotiate on the net pay but what's the big deal if she asks? You can try to accommodate and just be up front that you wont be able to control the final dollar amount because of tax laws. Or just offer a figure you think is fair and call it a day. The range on this thread seems to be $600-$950.

You give a rate which includes taxes. She fills out a W4 and that will determine her takehome. You can't guarantee an after tax rate it's very situation dependent. If she gets married it would change, if she moves to a different state it would change etc etc.

Around $950

We paid $1100 a week for 2 kids for a 46-hour week. This was 3 years ago. It included regular overtime and a health insurance subsidy. So $900 a week does not sound that high to me for one kid, especially if there are any additional children/duties/hours, employment-related subsidies, etc.

I know when we parted ways our nanny shared with us that her new employer wanted to pay her $850/week for one kid, and she negotiated up a bit. I believe that also included a health insurance subsidy and a few hours of overtime.

We had a great nanny for $15/hr. Don’t believe what you read on these forums. It is important to give guaranteed hours and paid vacation as, like anyone else, nannies need to Elbe able to meet their monthly expenses.

Probably around $900. Hard to know for sure when you don't know her tax info yet. There are online calculators for 'net to gross' paycheck that would give you a rough estimate.

$17.50 per hour is the lowest rate I've ever heard of for a good nanny in DC. Assuming it's for one kid, 40 hours per week.

A nanny I am looking to hire is requesting $700/week in DC (she lives in MD).
What would the weekly rate we need to pay her? We've looked at lots of different nanny calculators online but all are giving us different results. Anyone pay lose to this and can share??
