Call your Pediatrician if you are really worried. I suspect that it all is fine. And ask in the future insist that she send the kid to you with any medical issue that requires ointment.

Thanks everyone, a feel a little better now. I talked to my sister who is a doctor and she told me it won't be a problem because it was just a few spots.

What kind of steroids? I suspect it’s 0.5%triamcinolone? Even it’s other steroid, no damage is done. I apply that for my kid with mosquito bite all the time or eczema. It works very well.

As far as antibiotics ointment, some people may have reactions to it. But shouldn’t be a problem in general.

The only problems I see here is your mil should have ask you first.

She was actually uncharacteristically cooperative when I told her the danger and that this needed to stop now. So that part won't be a problem. I am just worried about how much damage she did. I can't believe she would use her prescription creme (that her own doctor warned her to use only twice a day) so blithely on a baby. "It worked for me!".

I think you need to explain her that you are a parent, you are responsible for medical care and she has no rights as such so what she is doing, if without your permission is technically illegal which if something goes wrong, she might /will be held responsible. It think if she is as you describe her you might want to somehow delicately inform her to your and her rights as she might do something while you are not around and unintentionally hurt a child.

I am vacationing with my ILs. I just released that my MIL used her own prescription based topical creme on my 13 month old on several occasions to "treat" mosquito bites. There is nothing to be treated by I let her do it without examining the creme because she is a very difficult aggressive woman with i-know-best attitude but she loves the kids and I wanted to keep the peace during the vacation. The creme contains 0.5% steroid and 1% antibiotic. How dangerous is this? It is not supposed to be used with children under 12 months but my kid is barely above that.

I can't believe I haven't checked this immediately. I am so upset with myself and with MIL. She used it several times a week ago and I last evening and tried to use it this morning which is when I discovered and removed it.
