My in-laws bring leftovers from him TO the beach and then push them on us to take home 4hrs in the car. Today I politely declined and said “our car is packed to the gills and we don’t have a cooler. We can only take what we plan to eat during the ride”. And my MIL listened! It was a miracle!

NP. I don’t give in to whiny, pouty brats of any age.

I think it’s definitely an emotional response and not wanting to see any food waste. Next time I would say something along the lines of “ thank you we don’t want it but if you don’t want to see it go to waste you can always freeze it when you get to your home.”

Might be a remnant of the time when people packed food for road trips.

I hate taking someone else's leftovers, because I'm a microbiologist and know they probably didn't follow best practices. My own? Perhaps, since I don't want my effort to go to waste.

I don’t mind an offer; that’s nice, and reasonable.

But proactively packing, then pushing, then pouting? That’s beyond.

Wow some posters are obnoxious. Your spouse needs to draw a line. There is no reason you should take stinky meat and have to find a garbage can just to appease her.

Sounds like your MIL has her own emotional issues to work out. Why do you care enough to even take the time to post here? Let it go and focus on something that will add value to your life. Even thinking about this takes energy away from something positive in your life.

I hate waste, too. But when we leave the beach, I frankly have zero desire to haul communal taco meat and leftover spaghetti 5+ hours in the car home from the beach.

MIL pouts that she packed us leftovers on our own steam and we declined. She pouts when we offer to toss them. Toss them or take them yourself!

And yes, we pay our own way.
