I hope you tried working out and a super healthy diet first. And don’t flame me — I am from a family with generations of mental health issues and have seen the gamut of treatment approaches.

I think it’s very individual.

DD takes 10 mg. She’s been on the same dose for 6 years for anxiety. We tried to go up to 20 mg but she became activated and just seemed really disinhibited. She’s a rule follower and was suddenly getting into loads of trouble. When we reduced the dose, the behavior disappeared. I think she’d get more benefit from a higher dose if she could tolerate it but 10 mg definitely takes the edge off. The psych felt she was likely to have an issue with Prozac since it’s also an SSRI. Instead she suggested we add Deplin and that seemed to be a huge help.

I personally took it years ago and felt 10 mg was enough for me and had no need to go up.

Now I’m on 40 mg of Lexapro for OCD with 90 mg Buspar as adjunct. I’m 55 and 180, working on it!

Which one do you think works better, DS has social anxiety with obsessive negative thoughts? It is affecting him terribly right now.

NP. It totally depends on the person. They can both work for that issue. It will depend on which works better with your child's brain chemistry.

True, but it's helpful to hear about other people's experiences, esp when thinking about what to ask the doctor.

OP here - wow this is helpful and interesting. So it wouldn’t be unreasonable it sounds like, for me to ask the doc about increasing the dose...

3.5 ml — unsure what that is I’m mg.

For us, it’s been life-changing (in a positive way).

My sons psychiatrist says that the dosage for an SSRIs is not really weight or age or size dependent, although there are upper limits to how large a dose should be given.

FWIW I weigh 170 lbs (working on weight loss) and take 25 mg of Prozac daily - both for anxiety. My 130-lb 9th grader takes 65 mg.

I am interested in this too. DS is going to ask his Dr. either Prozac or Lexapro again. His anxiety attacks are off the charts, sadly. Dr. is always giving smallest dose, and I wonder what dose for 138lbs? Which one works faster? He takes buspar, and it is not working for performance anxiety that is almost at the panic attack level.

Thank you - can you share how old/what weight? I am just wondering how they determine the dose and how much I should nudge the doc to consider increasing.

My 13 yo is on 10mg and it seemed to help a lot, but it we’ve had a set-back and I wonder if it’s too low a dose. DC also described thoughts that sound like OCD. Obviously I’m contacting the psych but am curious to hear about other parents’ experiences in similar circumstances.
