+1. It’s possible to have platonic male friends of course, but managing the dynamics can be different, and establishing no sexual interest without tanking the friendship can be complicated. Letting a sexual interest simmer under the surface on either side is a long term problem and shouldn’t be indulged. So if you are specifically looking for a male BFF rather than female, there is a danger that the underlying sexual interest, on one side or the other, is really what you’re looking for/wanting.

I wouldn’t give up on him yet. Maybe he’s going through something himself. How are other aspects of his life (job, friendships, etc). Might be bigger than just not wanting to hang out with you. Either way, try starting out small and give it some time.
