They are gas guzzling SUV's but they are marketed as cool laid back hippy cars so the limousine liberals around here can feel ok driving them - most SUV's are sold as status symbols or bully mobiles not a way to be hip and cool and environmental.

And to re-iterate Subarus are SUV's - not cars or wagons.

The Forester and the Outback get 30+ mpg. Is that considered gas guzzling?

Ummm yes - there are a slew of cars that get over 40MPG on the highway now and most hybrids do even better. I mean sure it is a bit better than most SUV's and a lot better than say a Range Rover but in a warming world it is pretty poor.

What cars the same size as the Forester and the Outback are getting 40+ mpg?

And the problem with hybrids is eventually those batteries have to be dealt with, so they aren’t necessarily 100% positive for the environment.

You're right to a degree, but the outback gets 25 city / 32 highway. Not great but not terrible, relative to the industry.

That's pretty poor mileage these days - my 15 year old car does way better and the dog fits comfortably in the back. But I bet most Subaru drivers would claim to be concerned about global warming - there is a reason the Subaru ads don't mention the mileage even though I bet most people in their demographic would claim to care about it in the abstract. And yes I know hardly any car ads mention mileage these days.

We bought ours because we liked it best of the 5 mini-SUVs we test drive, it had the best safety ratings, and was the best deal. Win-win-win.

A wagon is more easy to maneuver than a giant SUV, plus you have AWD to use when you are forced to travel to work in snow.or bad weather.

When I first moved here from Colorado I noticed how few Subarus I saw. They seem to have exploded in popularity. I think it’s probably in part because the Outback is one of the only mid-range wagons contributes. The Eyesight is also an excellent addition to newer Subarus

We bought it for the safety record as well as for our big golden retriever. It’s been a great car.

Why does every soccer mom have an suv? Of course we don’t need it, but people what that they want, and they have the money to buy it. Dc has a lot of Subarus because it has a lot of practical people who don’t care about what their car looks like.

I mean, how many days/year are you going to require AWD? This isn't Vermont or Colorado.
