She was a working professional. She is unimpressed by self-employment. She views a 'real job' as something someone else gives you, that requires you to be at a desk 9-5pm. I don't know what she thinks about the money aspect.
As for those who commented on the kids, she is very kind to my kids. Her relationship with them has a totally different dynamic. However, I feel diminished in front of them when she talks like this. Even if I didn't run a business, as a mother I would always have 'job', so the whole thing is just rude and pointless to me and cuts me down in front of the kids.

Do not let your mother be a big influence in your children’s lives. She sounds so negative. Do not let her repeat her mean treatment to you pass on to the next generation. Show your children how to deal with a bully by setting your mother straight. You speak right up EVERY time she says you do not have a job in front your children and anyone else. This is how children learn to deal with bullies!

Explain to your children how your mother is old fashioned and does not understand today’s world of entrepreneurial positions. When she brings up your unemployment in front of friends, just jump right in and tell about your position. Tell how exciting it is in today’s world not to be tied to a desk and have several opportunities going at the same time and how much you love it. Direct all this conversation to other person, not your Mom. Repeat every time.

My mother, who is controlling, overbearing, and in her mind never wrong, continuously says I don't have a job. I''m an entrepreneur and have successfully been running my own internet business for 10 years. It pays much more than prior professional jobs I've had. However constantly my mother says in front of other people, including my two kids that I don't work. This really irritates me, but my mom has quite the temper. I typically try to avoid her wrath. Would you correct her? Or let it slide?
