I don't think there's anything wrong with saying "I love that we go out to dinner on my birthday every year. Why don't we pick the restaurant together next year? I'm finding my tastes are changing as I get older" or something a little self-deprecating so she doesn't feel it's targeted at her.

Thanks! I like this idea for next year.

Go and have a happy birthday, then have Indian tomorrow.

I mean, I take her where she wants to go and eat food I don’t like on her birthday. Is it too much to ask that every couple years she does the same? I guess your response speaks volumes as to why I just don’t make waves.

For my mother’s birthday, I always ask her where she would like to go for her birthday, and I have her pick the restaurant. Every year, she calls and informs me of the place she’s taking me for my birthday, and it usually suits her more than it does me. I never say anything and just go along, but it’s more annoying this year than in years past and I don’t know why. Maybe because I’m jonesing for some Indian (which she hates like I hated her birthday choice) as I get ready to head to my birthday dinner that’s been chosen for me.
