Legacy or outback.

I have an Audi A3 etron that is very similar to an e-golf. I love it. I fill the gas tank approx five times a year as most of my driving is short trips where I can find a charging station. I get approximately 25 miles on battery and always have the gas engine should I need it and on longer trips.

My husband drives a Mazda3 and likes it. He's had it since 2004 with few issues.

Agree. I have one of these with 2 kids and it’s great. 210K miles, I’m replacing the shocks on it because they are shot from a lot of city driving but that’s the most expensive repair I’ve ever had to make on it.

But anyone have an e-Golf? My future commute will be 30miles total as well and the e-Golf is the only electric car besides Tesla that doesn't look like a space ship.

A used Volt? You could do your commuting without gas and then have the gas range for longer trips.

How about something like a used Leaf or SparkEV? You’re only commuting 30 miles total and these cars are almost maintenance free.

I got a small Honda SUV. Not happy at all- no power and uses a lot of gas compared to my 12 year old Japanese. It has zero power. I drive mostly in the city but it's like I have a break on when it's time to go. Can't believe it's considered a good car.
Get a small Japanese sedan and be done. Civic is a great car but so was my little Mazda.

We have a Chevy Malibu and we like it. It’s cheap to fill ($30 last time and we find the backseat is a good size for the kids.

It's pretty impossible to go wrong with a Civic. For a DC commute where those 15 miles might take you an hour, you could also look into a used Volvo S60. They have crazy comfortable seats and you can find 2015s and 2016s for $16k-$18k on Autotrader.

I have a Ford Escape with 200,000 miles on it and have had to do no repsirs, just maintenance.

We've been getting along for several years with one family car, but now I'm getting a new job, commuting 15 miles each way. So we need a second car - I want it to be a decent commuter car, but also a back up family car (I don't want a smart car or some tiny thing).

Any suggestions? A suburu? Small SUV? or just a Civic? I could just use some help narrowing down the options.
