Pre leased Subaru? Highest rating for 2019. DH swears by Subaru for 1st vehicle. Has experience with my stepson who was a flakey driver at 18 (drove onto beach and accidentally drifted into ocean wtf). Thankfully, his stepbro, DS 16 has better driving skills and he must save now to contribute to his car, that I'm not allowing until he's 18.

This. It's what my parents did and what we'll do with our teens, although actually not likely to buy an additional car unless we decide to let one of the kids take a car to college. DH and I can both metro to work and both kids can walk to school so I can imagine we'll need three cars to meet everyone's non-work/non-school needs.

If you can afford a newer car, like 2015+, the safety features like backup camera and lane change detectors can be a big help to teen drivers. More airbags too.

I’m not there yet, but my sister wanted as much car around my nephew as possible for safety when he started driving, not a little 8-year old Honda.

IIHS has a great list of safe cars for teens. I would start there.

My kid is getting my Subaru Legacy with Eyesight. It’s safe and not very powerful.

This will probably be us in less Dad and Mom have newer cars and then we'll pick a car we all agree on and we can afford.
