I think you are mistaking the effects of lax parenting for the effects of playing video games.

It might help if you could be more specific about what you're asking. Are your children purchasing cell phones for themselves without your knowledge? Or are you allowing them to use phones you have purchased without first establishing rules for their use?


It's not clear from your post why, as their parent, you can't just take the phone away from them if you think it's causing a problem. Or are you talking about someone else's children?

I thought this was going to be a post to recent research.

The last research I read (which was probably a decade ago) indicated that male children under a certain age (maybe 8?) saw the greatest effects from viewing violence and that the effects extended even to “violence” that we consider socially acceptable, like NFL games. No effect was seen in female subjects. That was one study that I thought was somewhat interesting. Would love to see more research on this. There’s also some research showing some causal link between some types of video games and certain issues with attention/impulse control, which can certainly also correlate with violent behavior. Again, effect seems more pronounced with male children.
