That's sort of weird. in my family birthdays are a huge deal and Christmas is smaller gifts. I've noticed that my inlaws are opposite. i don't receive a birthday gift from them but so many Christmas gifts.

NP. You're "sort of weird" for thinking anyone outside of your worldview is sort of weird.

It's weird that other families do things differently?

Nothing anymore. When they were younger, I would get them a gift in the $25 range. Once they got older, it didn't seem right just to give them a gift card or money so we just send them a card now.

Are you local? How old are the kids? Younger kids value time and attention far more than gifts. Older kids start to value gifts more. $20-$100 depending on how close you are and your financial situation.

I suck at being an aunt. I’m not close with my SIL at all nor her kids. But I for some reason am the only one in my marriage who seems to remember birthdays and to pick up holiday gifts.

So I show my love with gifts. I spend around $100 each holiday and have done personalized gifts (the custom books where the child is the main character, etc) or huge gift bags with tons of stuff.

I know it sounds ridiculous but I don’t want my nieces to think I don’t like them. It’s not that I don’t, it’s that my SIL doesn’t seem to have any interest in getting to know me so I try to spoil her kids whenever I can.

DH’s family pretty much does the equivalent of $50 for everyone, be it kids or adults. Not a big family so that’s fine. My family tends to do smaller amounts, more in the $25-30 range, so it’s always a bit tricky for me to strike the right balance.

It used to be something in the $50 range. Nephews are long distance and are 9 and 11 now. If we ever receive acknowledgment of gift, it's a preprinted/generic "thank you for the gift." My kids are younger, they've sent them things in the $25 range. All factors combined, we've dropped our budget.

I have 14 nieces and nephews. We do 20 dollar max. After the age of usually 9 or so they just want the 20 bucks which is fine. Christmas we draw names so I only have 4 to buy for (since each of my kids draw a name) and that is a 35 dollar max.

About $25, I think. One nephew always only wants money or things that cost $100, so I get him a gift card to a place I know he shops.

The others mention things they're interested in and let me shop. I spend more if I'm buying an actual present than a gift card, but I try not to splurge, because I don't want things to seem too unbalanced.

I think it depends how many you have. If you only have 2 versus if you have 10. $25-50 sounds nice.

We give $50 to our older niece and nephew (SIL's kids) because they never tell me what they want anymore, haha. When they were younger we'd spend anywhere from $30-50 on a gift depending what it was. My only sibling just had her first baby so we will probably do the same. It's unlikely we'd ever have more than 4 nieces/nephews total, if there were more we would probably spend less. My dad came from a big family and I had a lot of cousins on that side, so unless it was a "milestone" birthday, we typically only got actual gifts from godparents.

$25

Don’t back yourself into a gift amount that will likely have to grow or be paid out to many nieces and nephews. I start with $25 for beats. $50 for religious gifts, $250 for high school graduation. $300 for college.

Curious how much folks spend on Birthday gifts for nieces/nephews, particularly if just giving cash? Not always sure what is appropriate.
