You don’t want a lot of room to move side to side, especially around the head. In the event of a side-on collision, you don’t want there to be a lot of sideways movement that can lead to neck injuries, you want appropriate cushioning right by the head.

The mesa is one of the more narrow car seats.

We switched from the bucket seat to a convertible car seat at 5 months. Our kid was huge, and I couldn't easily lift the bucket seat + child, which is the whole point of the bucket seat, so we got rid of it. Kid was much more comfortable in the convertible seat, and we're still using it at age 4.

She has a huge head so the top portion doesn't give her much room to move her head and her belly touches both sides in the abdomen part. We have to kind of jiggle her around to get her aligned and the straps in the right spot. Maybe this thisnjust how it's supposed to be. It just seems too small.

At 16 lbs this seems really weird. Is she very short and chubby?

You'll eventually need a convertible seat anyhow. So if you aren't doing much carrying her around in your infant seat, you could make the switch now. Or at least try it out. My babies were both really big, and granted I used a different seat, but the main thing that became an issue was HEIGHT waaay before width or weight.

Take out the infant insert, adjust the headrest position up, loosen the straps. If you've done all these things, call uppababy. They can help you figure out what's going wrong. Your baby should still fit comfortably in the seat at that size. We used it to just over a year and right up to the height limit with no problems.

Do you still have the infant insert in the seat? If so, take that out. I used that for WAY too long with my first baby because I didn't realize it was supposed to come out. Different car seat but worth a look...

In what sense/dimension is it getting too tight? Your baby shouldn’t be outgrowing it yet, so you may just need to make some adjustments.

What is too tight? The seat portion? The length? The straps? If it is the straps try without her in it to fully pull them out. I have a different car seat but once the strap got “stuck” and I had to flip the seat and unstick it. Then the strap flowed freely again.

Get a convertible car seat. They're safer after your baby gets bigger anyway. Switch now.

Baby is 5 months, about 16 lbs and 26", way under the limits for the Mesa but it's getting to be much too tight, we can barely get her in much less another 15 lbs! Has anyone else had this issue? What do we move to next? I didn't think wed have to think about this for a long time.
