Um, what? Are your privileged bubbles really so opaque that you don't realize that many women in these situations have little to no access to birth control? In Syria specifically there are a lot of cultural barriers to family planning as well, including a lot of misinformation and fears about hormonal birth control.

OP do you even know how migrant refugee women get here?
You think they board a chartered plane or bus that offers them comfy accommodations with five-star security personnel keeping close watch over them?

Undocumented women making their way into American border towns have been beaten for disobeying smugglers, impregnated by strangers, coerced into prostitution, shackled to beds and trees and — in at least a handful of cases — bound with duct tape, rope or handcuffs.

They want something to look forward to.

And babies always love their mothers. Even if the world is falling apart around you, your baby will look up at you with an adoring gaze, and only YOU (the mother) can take care of his most important need (food, if you are breastfeeding.) It's a way of maintaining control and creating something positive, even in the worst of situations.

Would you be willing to offer poor teen girls free college or career training if they would consent to five year IUDs? Actually, I should say: Would you be willing to pay extra taxes to fund this offer?

Unfortunately this. My high school did a project with a battered women’s shelter when I was a senior. Many of the women talked about having their BC pills thrown away or being raped when they were fertile. A child is a way for an abuser to control the victim.

They have no access to any birth control and can't say no to their husbands due to cultural background. They also want to please their husbands and think children are a blessing in any situation.

You know the rights that women are fighting for here? This is the essence.

When you are not granted dominion over your body in the law. It’s not even about insurance coverage, or have to go to PP. it’s about never having had the choice, or knowing you had one, or having one. It’s about not actually understanding how your fertility works, because your job was to create life and not worry about those things. It’s about being beaten if they refuse their husbands.

So think about what these women are going though. Some have choices now, some don’t. But this is why we fight for women’s rights. This is why funding needs to remain overseas.

They have no - as in ZERO - access to birth control. Many are from patriarchal cultures that you would never understand. And some may view having a family as the most important thing in their life.

I am probably going to get flamed for this, but I see so many heartbreaking stories of refugees and many have very young children or babies. I guess I don't really understand if you are in an environment where you need to flee your circumstances why you would continue to have children. Why would you continue to bring new children into those situations?
