8 and 9 yos can’t be DA, so your point is irrelevant. But it made you feel good to post that your kid is DA, right?

Stop criticizing. I think their point is that an 8-9 yo shouldn't be doing more than an older, DA player.

NP here. If that was their point, it didn't come through.

But anyhow, 5X week is nuts for an 8/9 year old.

I know a lot of boys who do travel and rec at ages 8 and 9, which works out to be soccer 6 days per week, 4 practices and 2 games. They like it but definitely get a little burned out.

The are lots of kids who play 5-7 days a week. It is not "average", but so what? Some kids have an "above average" interest in the sport. That's normal. Has been that way all over the world for generations, and as soccer continues to grow in popularity in the US, it's becoming increasingly common here.

It's common for other parents, who are worried that their kids will fall behind because they don't have the same passion for the sport, to get judgmental about it, opining that it is "too much," or even calling those parents "looney" for supporting their kids interests. I suppose that's normal too, but it's also kind of pathetic.

OP, I remember when I was in my twenties and my roommate worked for a consulting firm. She worked most days until 6 or 7 but a couple times a month stayed late until 10. She and all the other data analysts used to say all the time, "We work until 10." People like to brag about their commitments. It is not true in general and it's not even usually true for them.

Almost no 8 or 9 year old practices 5 days a week. Very few older kids do either.

My daughter played on travel and rec one year and practiced 4-5 nights a week. The next year she played on adp plus rec and practiced 4 nights a week. It was a bit much at times. We certainly weren't bragging about it. I probably bitched about it sometimes because I got tired of all the carpooling and killing time on a soccer field sideline.

I know families whose kids have activities (not just soccer) literally every night. Does that seem excessive to you too, or is your issue with it being so much time spent on one sport?

We do two - three nights a week. We play travel and town rec. both kids are on the same nights at the same place so nbd. We aren’t doing anything else in the fall.

I honestly think that is too much. The come back from many would be that their child loves soccer so practice is fun. I watch practice and it is mostly drills. Not fun. I’m not going to say anything to these moms - just wondering if I’m abnormal for not having my child at a practice more nights a week and on multiple teams.

It really doesn’t matter what you think because they aren’t your kids.

Did you read the entire thing?
What is a normal/average amount of practice for this age? I honestly don’t want my son practicing five nights a week, but if I need to seek out another team so he gets one or two more nights of practice It would be ok. Just don’t know what is “normal” at this age since it is our first year of travel.

Your first mistake is asking here when the only thing that matters is what is best for you and your kid. That is why it doesn’t matter what you think is to little or to much for other people’s kids. If your kid wants more and you can do more that is all that matters. If the current amount is just right then that is all that matters.

Those other families are looney toons. Your kid is fine.

Two to three nights per week of practice are normal. Some kids also play pickup soccer or play with family and friends as well a few nights per week. I would let the interest and ability of the child (subject to other commitments and constraints) determine the amount of time they spend with it.
