Hey also, because I know this matters, there are plenty of kids in the public system here with LGBTQ parents and/or parents of color, including the then-PTO president at MRE when my kid was there.
also, BOE rep for our district is an LGBTQ parent

there are a good number of MC families in Hyattsville and UP whose kids go to Hyattsville Middle, mostly because of the excellent Creative and Performing Arts program (requires audition for acceptance; students can do dance, chorus, creative writing, media arts, visual arts, theater, band, orchestra)
there's also a large population of ESOL students and students on FARMs, so it's very diverse

Budget could be flexible depending on if we rent or sell our current DC home near Fort Totten. But just trying to get a since for communities, neighborhoods, school in MD.

MC and UMC families use their zoned middle schools in several parts of the county. Schools like Oxon Hill HS, ERHS and Bowie HS have FARMS rates of 46%, 40%,and 25% so some MC families must be sending their kids there. (The magnet programs at those schools do not make up the majority of the student body). Many mc and umc families who frequent DCUM send their kids to private or magnet program but not ALL PG residents have the same aversion to local schools

We live in Mount Rainier, and I am currently pregnant with our first. Based on what we've heard about MtR Elementary, we feel pretty comfortable sending our future child there. After that it gets a little shaky.
Mount Rainier has it's issues, but overall we have really loved living here. We have great neighbors, it's a very diverse town ... we have all sorts of families on our block, white, black, hispanic, mixed couples. Gay and straight. Diversity is celebrated here for sure.

Towns and neighborhoods with a city vibe? Walkable, access to public transportation, parks, rec centers, restaurants etc. With fairly good school options? Is this possible in along the DC line or near route 1 or 95?? (we are gay family of color with kids looking for options if we decide to leave NE DC)
