You are correct. My husband is in sales and is always on the phone. When he does this, it’s beyond annoying!

I leave the room when my husband is on the phone and he leaves when I’m on the phone. Neither of us will take a call on a speaker phone unless we are in a closed door room. It’s a common courtesy. If we are both in the kitchen and a call comes in to me that I know will be lengthy I put the caller on hold and move to another room.

Team OP! Your DH was rude and a big baby for going off in a huff.

I hate holding the phone to my face (I don't use Bluetooth). But working at a help desk, I can tell you that it's a pain when callers are using either, the sound is always messed up, volume is fine but sounds like people are chewing on their words or else other sounds make it hard to understand them. It can't always be helped (we work with software and hardware for a dedicated customer base, and sometimes they are on ladders).

My husband does the same thing as yours, and even though he doesn't have the auditory powers of his youthful years, he can hear PERFECTLY WELL without speakerphone. And he bellows into the phone when he talks to his brother, it's infuriating! I imagine my BIL holding the phone at arm's length...

It gives my husband a sense of importance to conduct a conversation publicly like this. I've told him it's rude for everybody else involved, but to no avail.

Team OP. I hate speakerphone, and DH uses it almost exclusively. Our conversations typically start with me saying "please take me off speaker".

I hate speakerphone in all contexts. The sound is bad, and it's not fair to hold everyone within earshot hostage to your conversation. Plus, everyone on speakerphone talks much louder than they would otherwise. It sucks.

I'm with you. I tell people to call back when they have time to talk to me. It happened at work last week, someone wanting to set up an appointment to come in, and also answering another phone and talking to someone else in their office. I hung up.

He wasn't ordering food. He was ordering multiple items from a store, and he was dealing with customer service because the website wasn't working. And I couldn't leave because I was watching our little kids.

I admittedly have a pet peeve: I hate it when my husband talks on speaker phone in my presence. I think it's annoying, and I also think it's annoying for the person the other line (hearing our noisy household noises (multiple kids, tv, video games, etc.).

So I just asked him to take it off speakerphone while he places an order as we were sitting on our front porch with multiple neighborhood kids playing kickball, etc.). And he left in an angry huff to take the call inside.

Who was right?
