My initial thought is that it's gross.
I mean, technically, no harm no foul, except this person is basically proving themselves to be a liar and willing to put her needs in front of others who potentially need the stuff way more. Unless this woman is poor and needy herself, in which case she should approach the school and be frank about her intentions.

It's distasteful but I'm not outraged on behalf of the kid whose jacket it really is or his/her parent. Look, if you have a lost jacket and you get a notice that L&F is being cleaned out and you don't bother to go look for your own jacket, it's your own fault you don't have it. So who's being harmed here? Maybe the charity it would have gone to? This is equivalent to people finding a salvation army donation box and taking stuff out of it.

Agreed this is lying and minor stealing to claim something lost is yours. But also agree it is unsurprising. I would think a LOT less of those parents. Not sure what I would do about it but I have some ideas.

Personally, my first thought is that I would be tempted for resale purposes IF that were explicitly allowed (anyone can have them if not claimed by last day of school). Hey, we don't have a lot of money.
But actually claiming they were my kid's items, that she had lost? No way.

Our school has an overflowing lost and found. They posted a picture of it last night and said anything left will all be donated on the last day of school. At the bus stop, I overhead a mom talking with another mom about this, and how there were some NorthFace jackets and Kleen Kanteen bottles in the mix, and that she was going to go on the last day after pickup and snag those items if they weren’t claimed by then, and that there were probably other “finds” in there as well.
