I am a teacher (not PreK) and almost all of my students come in. I wouldn’t expect their working parents to keep them home. I have a prek child and he will go to school because I have to work. We have an entire day following the last day of school to clean and pack.

The best end of year gift you can give is to keep them home. Teachers really have extra clean up to do.

I think it is useful for the students to help with cleaning and packing. It is part of being part of the school community, learning to take care of your school, pass along to the next class in good order and generally have a chance to say goodbye to the school year.

DCPS doesn't give teachers a couple of extra days to clean up/pack up. They wouldn't just not get paid, they aren't allowed in the building.

Of course, those tasks still need to be done, so they do it the last couple days of school.

Sorry but I expect a full school year for my kid. No wonder DCPS sucks so much if they are throwing away instructional time. "Every Day Counts" my *ss.

PK teachers at Head Start funded schools have to follow a lot of clean up protocols like soaking all toys in bleach and then letting air dry. They also can’t just show movies or let other teachers watch their kids. It’s actually super helpful if you keep them home to give teachers time to do this. Of course you are able to still send them, just trying to help a fellow teacher out! -Teacher, but not PK

Our school did a graduation a couple days before The last day and strongly “encouraged” us to keep our kids home. I had no leave as I’d only been back to work a couple months after having had a baby, so I sent my kid. I definitely wasn’t the only one. In the subsequent years I’d say 90% of the class has been there on the last day.

We did. I would skip if there were a good reason like a family trip, but I work so I need the childcare! The classroom was partially packed up and the teacher had them listening to music ans scrubbing down tables outside, they were having a ball with the bubbles.

Yes. Their older siblings, if they have them, are at school too. It's a fun day. Where else would they be?

At the school I work at I’d estimate 80-90% of the kids are there on the last day. The classrooms are packed up so it’s basically babysitting.

My son is prek4. Last year I was really surprised to see that there were very little kids there on the last day of school and the teachers seemed very busy trying to clean up the classroom.

Is this the case with most schools? Do you send your kids on the very last day?
