Is be disruptive in the classroom? Why do they think he should be medicated?

my ods did not learn organizational skills and other executive functioning skills when other kids were learning them because he was all over the place. It all went to hell in middle school and we put him on meds then. Younger kid we started on meds in 4th grade. It was our older who paid the price and suffered because we put off meds.

I have ADHD and have not outgrown it. I have inattentive type though, I don't know about hyperactive type.

To answer the question, my sister outgrow her hyper part and now post medication she’s very slow, stunted her growth. She still gets distracted and her planning skills still need help.

Teachers don’t make the call but do put pressure to go on it. My sister who a lot younger than me was put on meds. My mom worked an just needed her to attend school, so she did whatever they told her. This was 2010, not super recent, but now that’s i have a special needs child i am aware and will refuse to put his developing mind on it.

Nope. The older my kid gets, the more apparent it becomes he's got it. His father was diagnosed after DS was. We do medicate him for anxiety.

My child is 9 and not medicated.

He probably got it from my husband who has never been medicated.

We were kind of in your shoes OP. 4th grade teacher suggested we look into it. We did. She said it helped him. I think it probably did. We dropped it about 1/2 way through 6th grade to see how he managed. One teacher said he was distracted and playing with his scissors during class. He is now in 7th grade. He forgets to do assignments at times. I think he is distracted in class. BUT, he is getting by. It's a tough situation b/c you hate to have your kid on amphetamines when their brains are developing so rapidly. Yet, they probably do need the benefit of it to really focus.

So, for us, right now, we are not medicating. If he can get by without it -- even if it is not as good as he would do with it --- we are letting it slide. There may come a time in HS when he isn't doing as well and we re-visit the issue.

You just do what you need to do to get through the present. Worry about the future in the future.

I am just wondering if anyone's child grew out of ADHD symptoms as they matured. DS is 10 and is hyper and distracted, but doing fine academically. Teacher's think DS should be medicated, but I dread it.
