Because on this board, 'prestige' means elite private universities.

UVA is ranked the 25th university overall on US News (which has its issues, but is still the ranking most look at). That's very good, but not HYPSM, U Chicago, Duke, etc. UVA is the 3rd highest ranked state flagship (behind UCLA and UC Berkeley) and thus very prestigious among public universities.

I'd be beyond happy if my kids went to school there. I'm not from this area but moved to Virginia from the Midwest.
UVA is known as a good school where I'm from.

OP, the simple fact of the matter is that haters are gonna hate. No reason to try to change their minds.

Hard not to suspect trolling, but I'll humor you:

I think it has a lot to do with comparisons to elite privates, given that that is sort of the demographic in this area and on this board, as well as non-Virginians for whom the value proposition of UVA is very different. I also think it is a natural reaction to the historic pretentiousness of the UVA student ("How many does it take to change a lightbulb?" "One, they just hold it up and the world revolves around them.") and the natural hyperdemocratic urge to cut that down. I think "jealousy" or "didn't get in" are way back on the list.

I would also note that Maryland has raised its stock incredibly among public universities. They are both really strong. I'm curious whether you'd make the same move today.

If you are in VA, NC, MI, and probably TX, hard to deny the value proposition of the flagship state universities.

If you are not a Virginia resident, then there are scores of options that are better. I get it if you are in state, though you have to be down with the whole VA Gentleman veneer the campus projects.

I am not from the area and think UVA is a great school. Hard to turn down if you are in state and get in. Similar to Michigan and UNC. Way less compelling for OOS, but still a great school.
