My kid's college has a personal finance class in the business school that can be taken to satisfy one of the general ed requirements.

I wanted my kid to take this in high school.

At first the counsellor dissuaded her because he said it is used for very low performing kids to meet their math graduation requirement (!)...which I thought was unfortunate.

Finally, when she had room on her schedule senior year (of high school) she took it. The teacher did not seem like the smartest tool in the shed, but it took them through some elementary exercises that were eye openers for many (like the cost of owning a car, fitting a monthly income (for a job ad they found posted) into a montly budget (incorporating rents in this area, food costs, etc). The was impressed with their display of compounding. I thought it was useful.

She could follow Fearless Finance on Instagram. They do a lot of posts on finances for younger people and she will be there before she knows it!

Of course, she probably won’t take your recommendations on who to follow…

I'm not sure that they make a finance class for freshman, but I'm sure that any financial advisor will not mind helping and explaining something to novice economists. Although I am sure that there are very busy financial advisors who simply do not have free time to help others. Of course, I have never seen financial advisor help or explain anything for free, financial advisor always gets something to work with and always for very good money. My father owns a company that employs a lot of Financial Advisors. Of course, I don't know what my father's company does, but I think that if I ask one of his Financial Advisors for help in explaining something, he probably won't be able to refuse.

Do you have some money invested? We have some money invested, and our financial advisor meets with clients' kids for free, one hour every 6 months, to teach them the basics. It's so smart because she recognizes that they are her future clients, and at the same time, she will have more of their money to work with, since they are getting financially literate. See if your advisor does this.

Khan Academy has several online classes on this topic.

Does anyone have any experience with a personal finance class for an incoming freshman? Looking to get DD enrolled in something this summer either in person or on-line since she was unable to take the class offered at her HS.
I think it would be a great thing to have before leaving for college in the fall.
