Back to the OP-
I would choose PPA. One of the other benefits of the development program is that they mix grade levels. So your DD (who I assume is in 3rd grade now) will play with both 4th and 5th graders. It's a nice way to have the younger players stretch and the older players get to shine and be leaders. You also meet other kids from your school who you might not know because they are a grade up or down.

There's a bb program at palisades people rave about.

We are now in Premier and the difference in coaching and seriousness of practice is quite stark.

DD has a development coach who is quite serious I think they step it up at the older age groups whereas in the younger age groups they try to keep it more fun. The biggest contrast we've seen is between the quality of coaching in soccer and basketball. The basketball clinic coaches have been pretty checked out. It was at our school so I kept her in the clinic but would not have driven for that clinic.

We are 2 years into PPA development (after 2 years of parent coached-Stoddert). Hard to compare to a new program.

PPA has certain benefits, theoretically more organized with professional coaches, refs, nicer fields, consistency in game time/location and our team practices at the kids’ elementary school after school, so it’s really easy.

It had been hit or miss on the coaches (boys). Some seasons they have been fantastic, but you have zero ability to request the same coach for the next season (coaches come and go too). The 2 other seasons, the coaches were terrible. One yelled at the kids all the time (again, this is a rec league). The other seemed really checked out, but seems to be putting in more effort after parents complained.

What are you objectives and where are her friends playing?

Other PPA parent here- you should tell Adem about the coach experience. He's very receptive. We've had the same coaches for our teams every season and really liked them. One wrote up lengthy reports about DS and his development almost every week, which is more feedback than we get from he's teachers! I feel like all the PPA coaches know my kids pretty well at this point, which I like a lot.

I don't know what's going on right now on the girls stoddert travel side, but they were only able to field 2 teams of 2010 girls instead of the usual 3. Girls are not flocking to stoddert travel anymore. If you are thinking down the road to travel (where a lot of the top players already will be by next year) I'd reconsider stoddert completely.

I think the Stoddert new program is modeled after Arlington’s program...what it called ADA? The coaching is better and more consistent at Arlington.

It all depends on how fast the new program takes off, how much resources Stoddert puts into it and what type of attitude the Stoddert coaches bring to the program. It an unknown.

PPA is hit or miss. Depending on where you live you can look at Bethesda, Potomac and DCYFC(may or may not have a team in you DD age group).

We've been with PPA for 2 years now after 2 years at stoddert. That was before they had the All Star team, so I can't speak to that. We've had an excellent PPA experience with 4 coaches, all of whom have been fantastic. The other nice thing is that the coaches are also the coaches of the premier teams, so they will ID your kid if she's good and invite her to premier practices etc.

PPA seems like it would be more efficient for you - you'd have a game a practice and a clinic, rather than a combo of rec game, practice and allstar practice and game.

We do both Stoddert and PPA Development. A lot will depend on who your coach is for either team. We’ve had bad coaching from PPA and good coaching from Stoddert and vice versa, depending on the year. We’ve done both for several years.

I wish there was consistent quality of coaching, but no.

Stoddert you could at least excuse because it’s a parent volunteer coaching. PPA has been really disappointing since we pay a lot more, but it’s luck of the draw as to whether you get a good coach.

Yes the All Stars are new, so I guess a good gauge of how good they are would be to take a look at the Stoddert travel teams. I’ve heard coaching quality is also variable on the travel teams.

We are exploring these two options for our daughter who is ready to move beyond her rec team. Any thoughts / experiences would be greatly appreciated (recognizing that the All Star league will be new for the fall). Thank you!
