Actually no longer 6 miles.

Vehicles were backed up for nine miles shortly before 7 a.m. - NBC Washington Traffic team

This is why I warned my friends buying out beyond the beltway that you think your commute will 'only' be 45 minutes. Until you get a six-mile backup at 7:00am in the morning. And these backups are a biweekly occurrence these days.
