My child said last week that the sub didn't show and another staff member, who my child likes, took over. By the end of the day she lost it and these are generally well behaved kids.

Become a teacher - spring break was 3 days for us this year and very limited holidays and days off. Not as glamorous as you think.

OP, if you need to leave for an appointment during the day, how easy is it for you? Teachers have to find a sub to cover their class.
If you need to run an errand during the workday, are you able to? It's difficult for teachers to do so.
Can you use the bathroom whenever you want to? Teachers often have to hold it and then have to walk a long way to a staff bathroom.
If you will be out for a day, do you have to prepare plans for someone to do your work and find a person to work for you?

These are just a few reasons not to be jealous of a teacher, not to mention the kids and parents that one has to deal with every day!

Please, go volunteer in a school for just a few days and see what every teacher goes through. You will realize that that summer break is very needed and very well-earned!

I teach in another state and I get 10 weeks off. We end the 3rd week in May and teachers report back mid August. It's glorious.

I’m jealous. We don’t even get 8 weeks straight off anymore because we have to report for two “Salary Days” since Hogan screwed with the calendar.

I know that I’m not cut out for teaching, but I do envy the summers off a bit, but probably more so the “portableness” of the profession- there arent many places DH and I could both find good jobs so we sometimes feel rather stuck in the DMV. I’ve also known teachers who step away for a couple years when having a baby, or to go on sabbatical or similar for their spouse’s job, and have a relatively easy time finding a new job when they are ready to step back in. Again, not something I could do in my field.

But it’s not an easy profession by any means.

If she has elementary age kids she isn’t really off in the summer!

I'm a principal of an elementary school here in the DMV. I post this meme in our workroom and remind teachers that May is that last hole where you need a ladder to get out. I also need it as a reminder for myself.

Even if the rest of the year was a cakewalk —which it isn’t— the stretch from May 1 to June 15 can be hellish.

I think you should view her vacation time as ‘recuperation time’. Have you ever volunteered in a classroom? I also dream of such time off, but I couldn’t deal with the kids (aka parents).
