There is a real difference between a pool club (what you described) and a country club (private membership club, usually includes golf course, tennis and dining and other sport and social amenities). Having said that, I am surprised at the run-down conditions at some country clubs. For those prices (exorbitant membership fees and monthly food minimums), it should be five star all the way. I've been to clubs where the décor has seen better days and I believe the food is reheated Hot Shoppes leftovers from the 1970's. I will save my money, thanks.
I don't think OP is confused. I think OP's braggart co-worker is confused.
Anyone who is going to brag about a run down pool club is probably hoping no one will ever actually see it.
"Ohhhhh, we're going to the clubbbbb this weekend." Yeah, to sit in a wet suit and listen to children scream and drip ice cream all over the deck. We're all so jealous.
