Swim team gave me a glimpse into most of them. Congressional, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Belle Haven are very nice. Very nice. Kenwood was not. Army-Navy was not but they’ve since built a new clubhouse. Like pps mentioned, I think you’re confusing swim clubs with country clubs.

Maybe the club is your coworker’s happy place and he isn’t bragging. It sounds like a topic he likes and it is a highlight of his free time. I doubt he is actually trying to impress you with a dirty pool.

Mmmmm - Edgemoor Club is pretty down market and I have been to the pool, played tennis there and also have been to a couple of "events" there.
Ppl try to make it seem as if it is like Congressional, Chevy or what not. Of course the real clubs are in a different league than Edgemoor but think all of these "clubs" are a dying breed.

This thread made my night because my tacky neighbor pulled the same stunt... went on and on about her exclusive McLean "country club." My mouth hit the floor when we drove in. Pool and stupid cutesy named eatery that was basically fast food. Why don't people get that if you overplay something people expect something big and you just look like an ass when they see the real deal?

Anyone who is going to brag about a run down pool club is probably hoping no one will ever actually see it.
"Ohhhhh, we're going to the clubbbbb this weekend." Yeah, to sit in a wet suit and listen to children scream and drip ice cream all over the deck. We're all so jealous.

I think you are confused, OP. There is a real difference between a pool club (what you described) and a country club (private membership club, usually includes golf course, tennis and dining and other sport and social amenities). Having said that, I am surprised at the run-down conditions at some country clubs. For those prices (exorbitant membership fees and monthly food minimums), it should be five star all the way. I'm going to come off like a snob here but what is with the "country clubs" that consist of a pool, a few tennis courts and a shack where cafeteria food is served? A co-worker has bragged for years about their "club" and I was shocked to see no clubhouse, no golf course... just a pool with wet, concrete changing rooms that were duplicates of your local public pool, etc. Is this what most people consider to be a "country club"?
