I think given other's responses about lighter vs. heavier ones, I'd go and do the research at bike stores and find the one I want.

Then see if I could find that one at half cost. If not, buy the new one and then sell it for half price!

How much do you plan on using it? Rental might be the best way to go.

Pp I would also consider what the rental cost is and consider doing that since they are large to transport.

I don’t pay more than half if it’s used. Saving $20 isn’t worth meeting up with someone when you can get it shipped free. So I would buy new.
However I would also buy a nicer one and consider used if the price was good.
I only buy used if it’s a really bargain. I never understand why some people price online used items so high.

What about if it’s a Trek? Found one for $55. They are $ new, but this one is used (no clue how used.)

It depends on the new cost.

We need it for one vacation this summer, where we plan on biking a lot in a national park. I’m finding them used for $50, but I can get it brand new for $70 with my Redcard at Target. Logical me wants the new one because I know all parts will work. Frugal me wants the used one that I can turn around and sell for $50. Which would you buy?
