I think he ended up with 450 on reading, which is still not great but whatever.

Should add--we go to a Title 1 school. They need every passing grade they can get. I can live with my kid sitting through another test if it means the school looks a little better, and a passing grade is accurately reflective of his actual knowledge/performance.

My friends child struggles and has low self esteem. She does not ever do retakes because a. it wouldn’t change anything and b. Then her kid would know she failed. As it is, my friend just tells her “you did fine!” and leaves it at that.

How long does these tests take? I teach in MD so nobody is allowed to retake PARCC in ES or MS. It takes forever just to take it once.

I'll be the voice of dissent. I would, and in fact, did, allow retakes. My older child failed both her SOLs in 3rd grade and upon retaking them, passed. Ever since then, she's done well on her SOLs. My younger one is taking his for the first time and I have also given permission for retakes.

If I knew my child would fail again, I’d definitely not allow a retake. What is the point?

My child will fail again and it won't be close, but if it was close, I would not allow a retake.

It may not technically affect class placement, but you can bet the faculty will have full knowledge of which kids failed, and their class and homework, types of pull outs, etc. will all be impacted by that knowledge.

Sure, but whether a kid barely misses or barely passes doesn’t change what kind of student they are. FWIW, my kids have never failed an SOL or come close. But if they did, I don’t see any benefit TO MY CHILD of retaking.

I think in FCPS once in middle school they want kid to give up an elective and take an extra math class if they fail the SOL.

I would allow for math since it affects class placement and my kids are both capable of doing well there. Reading or another subject? Forget it. Those tests are long and boring.

I would only allow a retake if I thought the kid should be passing and a retake would help & the result would have an effect on class placement for the following year.
If not, sorry for the school but my kid doesn’t have to do a retake so your scores look better.

Our ES has us sign a form in advance of testing saying if we will allow our student to take an SOL retake if they qualify (miss it by only a little.) I always say no because I don’t want my child missing instructional time just to boost the school’s pass rate. If my child didn’t pass, well then she didn’t pass.

Do others actually allow retakes? If so, why?
