^^ UK universities are ENTIRELY merit based. They don't give a f*ck who your parents / uncle / grandma may have been.

They seem to be merit based, less politics.

Because ivies are the only worthwhile schools here? That's absurd.

Go abroad if you want the cultural experience or if a school offers something in particular that you want. But not because you think schools here aren't good enough for you.

DD got her Master's there. Had a great time and loved the city. She says the weather would get really old after four years, though.

+1 for Canada. Highly recommend McGill or Concordia in Montreal. Great place to be a college student.

I agree that if you are worried about a shock to the system it is better to consider staying in the US, or at least NorthAmerica. Canada May be a gentler introduction to Johnny Foreigner.

DD is graduating from Edinburgh in a few weeks. It’s been fantastic. But if your student “doesn’t want a shock to the system” please stay home, if only for the other Americans who are successfully integrating and getting a great education.

Anywhere in Europe will be a huge shock to the system for an American student.

Have you already read the appropriate threads on College Confidential and studentroom.co.uk?

Anyone have experience with this school? My child is interested in going to school somewhere in Europe but does not want a shock to the system.
