Not OP but yes you are being a total bitch. REI was a lifesaver for my 2 clumsy kids. They made it easy, it took a morning, and took all the stress out of it. But OP, not sure why you rule out REI. It was a pain to get down to that park in Alexandria where they teach but in hindsight totally, totally worth it. One morning and we never looked back.

I was never able to learn because of inner ear problems leading to balance issues.

Well, I guess I'm being a bitch too then. Teach your own kid to ride a bike! Sheesh. Its really not that difficult and that experience makes it all the more rewarding for you AND your kid.

What worked for me was that I told my daughter if she did not learn to ride a bike, that I would sign her up for one of these classes. I signed her up and told her the deadline. She did not want to go to the class, so she taught herself to ride literally the day before.

My son learned at an American Inline camp. The have learn-to-ride and bike-riding camps where they teach safety. I highly recommend them.

My daughter recently learned pretty quickly how to ride. Do these classes cover safety and “rules of the road”?

DC took REI bike riding class (was very useful) and at least the instructor we had was not a REI employee but an individual contractor with them who was cerified as cycling something instructor (whatever the organization certifies them). He said that he does private sessions as well - and he will come to you (but it will obviously cost more than being in a group REI class). You might ask your REI bike people for the contact info of their instructors and contact them directly.

Landon Summer has a one week camp that teaches kids to ride a bike. I have my 6 year old signed up for one in August.

Not exactly in NW/DC/Bethesda, but the National Park service has programs, and WABA can connect you to private instructors.
